Logo or Full Brand Identity? What Your Business Actually Needs

One of the most common questions I get from Brisbane business owners is whether they need a logo or a full brand. The two words get used as if they mean the same thing, but they do not, and choosing the right one can save you money now and headaches later.

What is a logo?

A logo is the mark that identifies your business. It is the symbol, wordmark or combination you put on your website, signage, invoices and social media. A good logo is simple, memorable and works at every size, from a tiny browser icon to the side of a van.

My logo packages include a primary logo plus variations, such as icon only, horizontal and stacked versions, and a full set of files for print and digital. You can see everything that is included on my logo design page.

What is a brand identity?

A brand identity is the whole visual system around your logo. It includes your colour palette, fonts, graphic elements, photography style and a set of guidelines that explain how to use them. It is what makes your business look consistent, whether someone sees your website, a brochure or an Instagram post.

If your logo is your signature, your brand identity is the way you present yourself every day.

When a logo is enough

  • You are just starting out and need to look professional quickly.

  • You are a sole trader or small team doing most of your own marketing.

  • You already have colours and fonts you are happy with and just need a better mark.

  • Your budget is tight and you would rather build up over time.

When you need a full brand identity

  • You are rebranding, or your business has outgrown its current look.

  • You have a team, or you work with printers, developers and agencies who need clear rules to follow.

  • You are launching a new product, venue or organisation and first impressions really matter.

  • Your marketing looks different on your website, social media and printed material.

Can I start with a logo and add a brand later?

Yes, and plenty of my clients do. A well designed logo gives you a strong foundation, and we can add colours, fonts and guidelines when you are ready. The key is designing the logo with that growth in mind, which is something I plan for from the first concept.

What does it cost?

My logo design starts from $2,700+GST, and the price is fixed and agreed before we start. Brand identity projects are quoted based on what you need. For more detail, read How much does logo design cost in Brisbane? or visit my branding design page.

Not sure which you need?

That is exactly what a discovery call is for. Tell me about your business and where it is heading, and I will give you an honest recommendation, even if that means a smaller job. Book a free discovery call.
