Last Saturday was the first day in my 4 week letterpress course at the Design College’s Strong Arm press. I was pretty excited to be finally getting my head around this beautiful old form of printing, and I was also looking forward to working on my typography skills.
Week one saw us learning about the history of letterpress, the different names of the equipment we were going to be using and it was also our first chance at getting our hands dirty!
We spent the day creating headlines in wood type, and printing proofs from that, then we finished with starting to layout our body text in lead type. Laying out the text is also harder than I had actually given thought to, as you have to lay the letters out upside down and back to front…confusing for the best of us!
Here are some photos from Week one, more to follow next week!
